Tom
had his seatbelt on, but no shoulder harness in the old convertible.
His face hit the steering column, which collapsed as designed, and
only got a scratch on his nose.
With the lap belt and collapsible column
you can impact up to about 50 miles an hour with minimal chance
of fatality. Add the shoulder harness and its up to about 60 miles
an hour.
Both
Tom and the Volkswagon
driver said they
were going less
than 35 MPH.
